The Tourist: Review

I saw the Tourist yesterday with Sam and I was going in with some medium-high expectations. I had seen the trailer and I was rather excited because this would show case a character that I haven't before seen in Johnny Depp, an ordinary man. Angelina Jolie's character I wasn't too fussed about because it just appeared to look as normal for her.
Her character was Elise, the mysterious woman who makes Depp's Frank fall madly in love with her. Throughout the movie it looked as though she was supposed to be a woman who could handle herself. She was tailed by the police all the time and she was involved with an extremely dangerous man. Yet as the movie went on it was Frank that was having to help Elise half of the time. This was a great disappointment for me, yet I have never really had that much in the way of faith of Jolie. I can appreciate that she can act, but I also feel that a lot of her roles are given to her because of her physical appearance more so than her ability as an actor.
Depp was the shining star in this movie. However do not take this compliment as meaning that it was a stand out. This movie has been nominated for an Oscar in the Comedy/Musical section (obviously as a comedy) yet there were few laughs. But back on topic. Depp's character was the simple, ordinary every day man who came across a beauty of a woman and was then taken on a trip of a lifetime, please excuse the cliché. It was a good portrayal and you really felt and empathised with him as he struggled to understand the complexity of Elise. I would not say that this is one of Depp's greatest roles, but it is definitely one that should be remember when talking about his range as an actor.
Paul Bettany, I usually find to be a great actor and one that I thoroughly enjoy, yet in this movie I hated him. It could have been because of the direction of the movie by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck or the script itself, but I found him to be a major pain in the arse. And it was not one of those characters that you love to hate, but one that you just hate and wish was off the screen.

The representation of Scotland Yard was saved thanks to a cameo appearance from Timothy Dalton. He was light-hearted and just lifted the, at times, dull mood of the movie.
And if only to complicate the script further introduce a gangster from Steven Berkoff. While it sounds as though I am complaining about the character, I am not. He was brilliant, what every crime boss should be and every moment he was on the screen he made the film brilliant. I complain because the script writers had him in there, and they didn't give him room to grow. Much like how I felt about Michael Sheen's Zuse in Tron Legacy, Berkoff's Reginald Shaw should have had more screen time and a further developed character.

Personally I do not believe this should have been nominated for a Best Picture in the Comedy/Musical section because it is not that kind of a film. It is a dull thriller with some light-hearten comedy thrown in and a few good twists in the plot. I feel that this movie is worth the ticket price at the cinemas and should be appreciated for what it is, and not for what it has been built up to be by the Oscar officials. I also say ignore the professional critics because they only see movies in technicalities, and they are only able to see what a checklist tells them to see. You can take what I have said on board or ignore it, but I am a person who loves to watch movies so I watch the movie without checklist in hand.

Disappointment

I got to Southlands, and I had arrived before Sam go there so I thought I would go to EB Games and buy Assassin's Creed II. I walked into the store, grabbed it, bought it in less than 4 minutes. It was probably a lot less, but you know.

Even more to my disappointment as Dad was driving up to drop me off, the car park was deserted. There was practically no one at Southlands. Though I heard that Garden City was a lot fuller. But I didn't go to Garden City did I!

Next year I will get to a really tough and rough Boxing Day sales. Or maybe I will line up my holiday to be in America for Black Friday. One day, I WILL experience rude, bitchy customers.

I'm excited.

Merry Boxing Day

Today is Boxing Day. It is the day after Christmas. In Australia it is like the equivalent of the American Black Friday. I don't know why American's call it Black Friday, I just know that it is the major shopping day of the year for them. Boxing Day marks the start of our Post-Christmas sales.

However I have spoken to a number of people in retail and the sales that are on after Christmas, are generally the same as the sales that are put on before Christmas. But in everyone's mind, if you buy something after Christmas, it is automatically cheaper. I have never really been shopping on Boxing Day before. Today I am going with Sam to see The Tourist at 1pm. Before that I hope I am going to pop into EB Games to buy Assassin's Creed II. I will see what all the hustle and bustle of the Boxing Day sales are like.

I hope I am not disappointed.

Merry Christmas

Today is the day. Enjoy it.

The Spirit of Christmas

This is a web comic by Tim Buckley which shows the true spirit of Christmas. I know there aren't that many people who check this blog, but there are even less who know about Ctrl+Alt+Del. It is amazing for those who understand gaming and certain parts of American culture.

Boost in my Stats

All of a sudden there was an influx of viewers to my blog. I thank this to the fact I asked Emily on facebook whether she was my mysterious Canadian blog viewer. So really I have Emily to thank for originally being bored enough to go and look at my blog, and then a smaller thank you to me for asking her on facebook.

I feel a little popular.

Christmas Eve

Today is the day before Christmas. This year will be my first Christmas as an "adult". I wonder if that means it is going to be any different.

Last night I went out with Betty and Diaan for Betty's birthday. We went to The Loft. It was my first legal bar. I feel so rebellious. We then proceeded to try and find a bottle shop. But they were all shut. So I haven't done all the legal alcoholic things yet, but I will soon.

Merry Christmas.

Tron Legacy: Review

The other night Dad and I went to go see Tron Legacy. I was sort of excited to see this movie because dad thought that the original Tron was amazing and so therefore this one should be as well. And I was super pumped to see the light cycle battles.

The movie began and it was looking alright. There was a great opening and it felt as though it was a follow up trying to fit in with the last movie. Then we got into the "grid" and it looked amazing. We were watching it in 3-D so the "grid" looked brilliant. Then we saw a light cycle battle and it was epic. However it was the only light cycle battle in the entire movie. There was a flying battle at the end of the movie similar to the light cycle battle but not as good.

Yet I feel that the movie was saved by one brilliant character Zuse. Played by Michael Sheen he was the stunning Machiavellian character who has some fantastic dialogue and action moments. And he also commanded Daft Punk. That was pretty kool.
He made the movie good for me. Otherwise it was just an average, flat movie.
Ah well, next I want to see The King's Speech with Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter.

Should be great.

O Canada

I looked up at my stats today and I saw where my viewers are from. My blog has had one view today and it was from Canada. Because of this I believe that it is either Tim or Emily.

I am thinking more so Emily. And if so.

Hi.

Lindt Chocolate

While it has its qualities of goodness, it should not be eaten in large quantities. Large quantities are equal to 2 pieces of chocolate.

Nevertheless, I fell sick.

Enter Scores

If I was living in Melbourne, right now I would be most likely crying over my pitiful score. However that is not the case as I am now living in Perth, where my life has taken a drastic turn from what I thought it was going to be. Now I am chilled and relaxed about what my score is going to be.

But in bigger and better news, my best friend Travis Jones has become the Dux of St. Bede's College with a score of 99.15. That is amazingly intense and bloody amazing for him.

In my life, not much has been really happening. I turned 18 on the weekend. That means that by Australian law I am now an adult. Yet I don't feel any different. Life is still the same.

Maybe if I had a special badge.

The Angel's Game

It is a novel by the Spanish author Carlos Ruiz Zafon. And just to let you all know, he is amazing. I have previously read The Shadow of the Wind and that was set in the magical Barcelona. That story followed the life of a young boy searching for an author. However The Angel's Game, which was set up as a prequel, followed the life of an author looking for answers.

I loved every page of the novel. It follows the life of David Martin who lives his life in the dumps only able to survive thanks to the help of his rich friend Don Pedro Vidal. Yet when a mysterious publisher turns up, he begins to un-earth a lot of deep hidden secrets.

The story was extremely intense and even when I finished the novel there were so many questions that were left unanswered. It is filled with mystery and what can only be described as a form of magic. And there are even elements of a great thriller in there.

Mum bought me this book over a year ago because I loved The Shadow of the Wind so much, and I am really glad that I finally read it.

It is amazing.

Whoops

It has been a while since my last post. Not that I have any avid readers or anything to disappoint but in a way, I feel as though I have let myself down. However I also feel that I should not receive all of the blame. For it is because of the show Chuck that I have been away from blogger. The show is so engaging that I haven't had the time to really speak to anyone over the internet, and instead I have been watching the show.

And there is good news. I am now up to date with all the episode, and the next on is released on the 17th of January, so there should be no interruptions.

Hopefully.

Chuck

It is the name of the television show about a guy who has become a human computer. An ordinary guy becoming involved with the CIA and NSA. It is a heap of fun. Except Megavideo and my lousy BitTorrent won't download season 2 fast enough. This makes me sad.

In further news, my "holidays" have ended and I am starting to do proper house work and stuff like that. Tomorrow I am cleaning up the entire house for $100. To do this job properly, I am going to be busy ALL day. I am going to be stuffed.

Someone else give me a lot of money, it is for a good cause.

Me.
